JUST LET ME PEE!
I imagine this as a barbaric yawp -- a primal war cry for the injustice of discrimination by toilet.
Trans* and gender non-conforming individuals face the inability to go into a room in private and pee (or poop). Legislators have campaigned to make it illegal for someone to enter a restroom of the "wrong" gender and have even suggested requiring ID or medical examinations to prove that you have the genitals to use a toilet in a socially appropriate way.
"I am just weirded out and would feel uncomfortable peeing in the next stall over."
Setting aside that this is cisgender privilege, I get it. It can be weird and awkward. Check out this scene from A League of our Own:
Then again when I sit on a toilet and I hear in the next stall over unholy bean-burrito induced noises that threaten to summon Cthulu I don't stop to think:
"Well at least we have the same genitals! That makes it all better!"
It's all awkward.
This blog started as a way to log my efforts to get the Student Services Building at the University of Utah a gender-neutral bathroom and also provide a resource for others working on similar projects to have a place to start. I know that I am not the first one to work on a project like this yet I had a very difficult time finding any sort of guidance on how to make it happen. Hopefully this blog will help someone else on the same journey.
